iCDS SNAC Fee Calculator

Contents

iCDS Project Overview Edit

Author: James A Zucker (LinkedIn)

Update 10Feb - v1.1 is available, this release adds the option to email the results of the calculator.

The 1.0 version of the application will implement a SNAC(Standard North American CDS), upfront fee calculator using the ISDA Standard CDS Model, www.cdsmodel.com and based on the functionality found on the MarkIt partners website, www.markit.com/cds. The applications free. Its only objective is for the author to have a non-trivial application in the iPhone AppStore. The approach of the application is to recalculate the upfront fee and intermediate results and display them as the user changes outputs using the quick entry controls or the pickers accessed by pressing the buttons displaying the inputs. Copyright 2009, 2010 applied for.

InstructionsEdit

Here is an attempt to describe how to use the application in words, I hope the interface is intuitive enough for this description to be adequate.

Inputs
  Line 1: Quoted bps/Fee - Trade Date - Buy/Sell
  Line 2: Recovery Assumption
  Line 3: Maturity
  Line 4: Notional
  Line 5: Running Coupon
  Line 6: Currency
Outputs
Line 6: Upfront Fee (the primary output)
Lines 7/8 contain the following in columns:
    Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3
Start Date / # days accrued | Accrued Interest | Spread*
Settlement Date | Clean Price | UpFront Fee*
*The quoted value or the value implied by the quote entered.

The application does all calculations locally on the device. It is reliant on WIFI connectivity to download the LIBOR curve published by ISDA via MarkIt partners from www.markit.com when the application launches or when the trade date or currency is changed. Once downloaded all remaining functionality is performed locally. For example you can select a liquid maturity 1Y/5Y/10Y/20Y by the quick entry or click on the button to the left displaying the current maturity and pick a maturity manually.

Background Edit

I started this project when as a 'former' Mac developer I was swept up by the excitement of the iPhone App phenomenon. This led me to a drive to get a non-trivial application into the App Store. I convinced my family to buy me a MacBookPro for my birthday in Sept, 2009 and about 20 hours of effort latter I had my first GUI prototype running on the simulator.

Along the way I have learned a lot about the rich environment of information sharing now happening in the development community. I was reintroduced to the Apple Development Tools (XCode) and the Snow Leopard OS. Not having touched MPW(Macintosh Programmers Workshop) in over 15 years, it was like I never left home with the added power of the underlying LINUX environment that I am well versed in using every day at work. I then was introduced to new resources including ITunes U, blogs and code.google.com .

Release Notes Edit

  • Version 1.1 10 Feb 2010 - Added email option
  • Version 1.0 Jan 2010 - Regarding the precision of the inputs to the calculator. In this 1.0 version you can quote a fee to 3 decimals, this was done to facilitate testing the fee/spread conversions and it is understood most trades only use 2 decimal places. For the same reason implied spreads are to 2 decimal places. Maybe in a future version this will be made configurable.
